Sonogram Tech Work Description

Stantonsburg NC ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Stantonsburg NC clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job duties of an ultrasound technician may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Stantonsburg NC ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many schools set up through Stantonsburg NC clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in North Carolina or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Stantonsburg NCAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Stantonsburg NC outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the balance of the training and classes may be attended online in your Stantonsburg home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online colleges are often more affordable than traditional options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be lessened also. But similarly as with every sonographer school you are considering, verify that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Stantonsburg NC ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Stantonsburg NC area. Clearly location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other things that you must also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? Most ultrasound technician colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous review of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Stantonsburg NC health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the sonogram technician schools you are reviewing have relationships with Stantonsburg NC hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Stantonsburg health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with North Carolina healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Stantonsburg NC residence. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  school you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Stantonsburg NC area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
