Sonographer Occupation Description

Severn NC ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Severn NC clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job tasks of a sonogram technician may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Severn NC ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer programs do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many schools organize with Severn NC clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in North Carolina or whatever state you decide to work in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Colleges

So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Severn NC hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the balance of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Severn home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are often less expensive than traditional alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be lessened also. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech school you are reviewing, verify that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Severn NC ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Severn NC area. Naturally location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are additional variables that you must also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Severn NC employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound tech colleges you are assessing have partnerships with Severn NC hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist graduates and students form professional relationships in the Severn healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with North Carolina healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they select will have to be within driving distance of their Severn NC residence. Students who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  program you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Severn NC area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
