Pineola NC ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Pineola NC clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work duties of an ultrasound technician can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Pineola NC ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to complete. Another option for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that most sonographer programs do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous schools organize through Pineola NC hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in North Carolina or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonographer Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Pineola NCAs previously mentioned, virtually all ultrasound tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus facility. Practical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Pineola NC outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the balance of the training and classes may be attended online in your Pineola home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are often less expensive than traditional options. Costs for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But just as with any sonographer school you are looking at, verify that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Pineola NC ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Pineola NC area. Naturally location will be significant if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other factors that you should also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous review of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Pineola NC employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the sonogram technician schools you are assessing have partnerships with Pineola NC hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist students and graduates form professional connections in the Pineola medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the sonographer programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with North Carolina healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Pineola NC residence. Those who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Pineola NC area, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
