    Oakboro, North Carolina

    Oakboro developed because of the railroad. The original town started at a natural salt lick called Big Lick. When the railroad came through in 1913 the town moved closer to the railroad and became "Furr Town". In 1915, the name was changed to Oakboro.

    At the 2000 census,[2] there were 1,198 people, 485 households and 361 families residing in the town. The population density was 595.1 per square mile (230.1/km²). There were 535 housing units at an average density of 265.8 per square mile (102.8/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 75.79% White, 19.70% African American, 0.67% Native American, 0.33% Asian, 2.25% from other races, and 1.25% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.42% of the population.

    There were 485 households of which 29.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.3% were married couples living together, 14.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.4% were non-families. 23.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 2.86.
