Ultrasound Tech Occupation Summary

Newland NC ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Newland NC clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job tasks of an ultrasound tech may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Newland NC ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finish. Another alternative for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor through Newland NC clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in North Carolina or whatever state you decide to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Classes

student attending online sonography class in Newland NCAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an approved off-campus facility. Clinical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Newland NC hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the remainder of the classes and training may be attended online in your Newland home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are often less costly than traditional alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But just as with every sonographer college you are reviewing, check that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the right option for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Newland NC ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Newland NC area. Clearly location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into account, such as if the schools are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive review of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Newland NC health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram tech colleges you are interested in have partnerships with Newland NC clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Newland healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with North Carolina healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Newland NC home. Those who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  college you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Newland NC area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
