Ultrasound Tech Job Summary

Springville NY ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Springville NY clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job tasks of a sonogram tech may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must regularly evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Springville NY ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to complete. Another option for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer colleges do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many schools sponsor with Springville NY clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in New York or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Sonographer Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Springville NYAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Springville NY hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the rest of the training and classes can be attended online in your Springville home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently more affordable than on campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But similarly as with every sonography college you are looking at, make sure that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Springville NY ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Springville NY area. Of course location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional variables that you should also take into consideration, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Springville NY health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the sonogram tech colleges you are assessing have associations with Springville NY hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Springville healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with New York healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they pick will have to be within travelling distance of their Springville NY home. Students who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Springville NY area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.

In 1808, Samuel Cochran became the first permanent settler in the town. The Springville Academy, opening in 1830, became the first high school in Erie County. It was given its current name, Springville Griffith Institute, in 1867 to honor Archibald Griffith, a donor. The village of Springville was incorporated in 1834 from part of the town of Concord.
