Sonogram Tech Work Summary

Washingtonville NY ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Washingtonville NY hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job tasks of an ultrasound tech may involve:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Washingtonville NY ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finish. Another option for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that the majority of sonographer programs do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many schools organize through Washingtonville NY hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in New York or whichever state you choose to work in.

Sonographer Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Washingtonville NYAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an approved off-campus facility. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Washingtonville NY outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Washingtonville home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are often less expensive than traditional options. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be decreased as well. But similarly as with any sonography college you are looking at, check that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the right option for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

Questions to ask Washingtonville NY ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Washingtonville NY area. Certainly location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into account, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? Most ultrasound tech colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Washingtonville NY health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram tech programs you are assessing have partnerships with Washingtonville NY hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Washingtonville healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with New York healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their Washingtonville NY home. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  program you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Washingtonville NY area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.

    Washingtonville, New York

Washingtonville is a village in the Town of Blooming Grove, Orange County, New York, United States. The population was 5,899 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Poughkeepsie–Newburgh–Middletown, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area as well as the larger New York–Newark–Bridgeport, NY-NJ-CT-PA Combined Statistical Area. The village is named in honor of George Washington.

Washingtonville was first settled in 1731. The village maintained a slow but steady growth during the second half of the 18th century. In 1809, John Jaques, a boot and shoemaker, set up his shop in this tiny settlement of nine houses, then known as "Little York." Jaques would later establish Brotherhood Winery, the oldest continuously operating winery in the United States, in 1839.

In its earlier years, Washingtonville was called "Matthews Field," even before it became known as Little York. A part of the Rip Van Dam patent, it was sold to Vincent Matthews in 1721. Matthews was the first white settler of the region. Its earliest known inhabitant was an Indian by the name of Moringamus, whose wigwam or tepee was once pitched in back of where the Coleman bottled-gas plant is located now.
