Cold Spring NY sonographer performing ultrasoundSince you have made a decision to obtain an ultrasound technician degree near Cold Spring NY, the next step is to start the process of picking a school. To begin with, you have to find the ideal program that will provide the proper instruction to become a skilled professional. And since some states do require that sonographers be either certified or licensed, depending on your residence you may also need preparation to pass a certification or licensing examination. So it’s extremely important that you investigate each program in order to assess and compare your alternatives. But exactly where does one start? A number of potential students will start by searching for colleges that are within commuting distance of their homes and then by comparing tuition. Of course location and cost need to be taken into account when making a decision, but there are additional critical factors as well. For instance, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they provide internship programs. These and additional qualifiers will be addressed more in depth later in this post. But to start with, let’s go over what a sonogram tech does and the degrees and online training options that are offered.

Ultrasound Technician Occupation Summary

Cold Spring NY ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Cold Spring NY hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job duties of a sonogram tech may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Cold Spring NY ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to complete. Another option for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that most sonographer colleges do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many schools organize with Cold Spring NY clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in New York or whatever state you elect to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Cold Spring NYAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Cold Spring NY hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the rest of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Cold Spring home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online schools are many times more affordable than on campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be decreased as well. But similarly as with every sonography college you are reviewing, verify that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

Questions to ask Cold Spring NY ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Cold Spring NY area. Certainly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other things that you must also take into consideration, such as if the schools are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? Most ultrasound tech schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Cold Spring NY employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the sonogram technician schools you are evaluating have partnerships with Cold Spring NY hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Cold Spring medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with New York healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they select will have to be within travelling distance of their Cold Spring NY residence. Students who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  program you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Cold Spring NY area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.

    Cold Spring, New York

Cold Spring is a village in the town of Philipstown in Putnam County, New York, United States. The population was 1,983 at the 2010 census.[2] It borders the smaller villages of Nelsonville and Garrison. The central area of the village is on the National Register of Historic Places as the Cold Spring Historic District due to its many well-preserved 19th-century buildings, constructed to accommodate workers at the nearby West Point Foundry (itself a Registered Historic Place today). The town is the birthplace of General Gouverneur K. Warren, who was an important figure in the Union Army during the Civil War. The village, located in the Hudson Highlands, sits at the deepest point of the Hudson River, directly across from West Point. Cold Spring serves as a weekend getaway for many residents of New York City.

The site of present-day Cold Spring was part of the lands belonging to Adolphus Philipse. The first settler of Cold Spring was Thomas Davenport in 1730. In 1772 a highway master was chosen for the road from Cold Spring to the Post Road from New York to Albany. A small trading hamlet grew alongside the river by the early 1800s.[3] A couple of sloops made regular weekly trips from Cold Spring to New York, carrying wood and some country produce, which came over this model road from the east. Those trips by sloop usually took a week.

In 1818 Gouverneur Kemble established the West Point Foundry opposite West Point to produce artillery pieces for the United States Government. The nearbys mountains contained veins of ore, and were covered with timber for fuel. A brook provided hydropower, and the Hudson a ready shipping outlet. In 1843, the Foundry built the USS Spencer, the first iron ship built in the U.S.[4] With the influx of workers at the Foundry, local housing, businesses and churches increased, and Cold Spring was incorporated as a village in 1846. The first President of the Village was Joshua Haight. The Foundry became famous for its production of Parrott rifles and other munitions during the Civil War, when the foundry grew to a sprawling 100-acre complex employing 1,400. It also manufactured cast iron steam engines for locomotives, gears, and produced much of the pipework for New York’s water system. The rise of steel making and the declining demand for cast iron after the Civil War caused the Foundry to cease operations in 1911.[5]
