Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Most work in Cold Spring Harbor NY clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job duties of an ultrasound tech can include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Cold Spring Harbor NY ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finish. Another option for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that most sonographer programs do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools organize through Cold Spring Harbor NY hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in New York or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Cold Spring Harbor NYAs aforementioned, virtually all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Cold Spring Harbor NY hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the balance of the classes and training can be attended online in your Cold Spring Harbor home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are often less costly than on campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech college you are reviewing, make sure that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Cold Spring Harbor NY ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Cold Spring Harbor NY area. Clearly location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional things that you should also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are a few questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram tech colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive review of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Cold Spring Harbor NY employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the sonogram technician programs you are reviewing have relationships with Cold Spring Harbor NY clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Cold Spring Harbor medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the sonographer schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with New York healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their Cold Spring Harbor NY residence. Students who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  college you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Cold Spring Harbor NY area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.

    Cold Spring Harbor, New York

Cold Spring Harbor is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in the town of Huntington, Suffolk County, New York, on the North Shore of Long Island. As of the 2010 United States Census, the CDP population was 5,070.[2]

Cold Spring Harbor was named after the naturally cold freshwater springs that flow in the area. Its economy mainly tied to milling and port activities, it rose in prominence as a whaling community in the mid-nineteenth century. After the decline of whaling in the 1860s, it became a resort town with several hotels. In the 20th century it became known as the site of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, although the laboratory itself is located in the adjacent village of Laurel Hollow in Nassau County which was called Cold Spring, before incorporation.

Today it is primarily a bedroom community of New York City, with a small central business area running along Route 25A, and is home to many educational and cultural organizations: the Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum, the Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery and Aquarium, Dolan DNA Learning Center, the Uplands Farm Sanctuary (home of The Nature Conservancy's Long Island chapter), and a museum exhibition gallery run by Preservation Long Island.
