Ultrasound Technician Job Description

Bayard NM ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Bayard NM hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job functions of a sonogram tech can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Bayard NM ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to complete. Another alternative for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer colleges do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many schools sponsor with Bayard NM hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in New Mexico or whatever state you decide to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Bayard NMAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Clinical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Bayard NM hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the remainder of the training and classes may be attended online in your Bayard home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials can be lessened as well. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech college you are reviewing, confirm that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Bayard NM ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Bayard NM area. Certainly location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional things that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? Most sonogram tech colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Bayard NM health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the ultrasound technician colleges you are interested in have partnerships with Bayard NM clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to receive hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist students and graduates develop professional connections in the Bayard health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with New Mexico healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Bayard NM residence. Those who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  school you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Bayard NM area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
