Sonographer Work Description

Kenna NM ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Kenna NM clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily job functions of a sonogram tech can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

Kenna NM ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finish. Another alternative for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Kenna NM hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in New Mexico or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Kenna NMAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Kenna NM hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the remainder of the training and classes can be attended online in your Kenna home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently less expensive than traditional options. Costs for commuting and study materials can be decreased as well. But similarly as with any sonographer school you are considering, confirm that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Kenna NM ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Kenna NM area. Clearly location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are additional things that you must also take into consideration, such as if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech schools have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Kenna NM health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram technician schools you are evaluating have associations with Kenna NM hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Kenna healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Find out if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with New Mexico healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they pick will have to be within driving distance of their Kenna NM home. Students who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  school you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Kenna NM area, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.

    Kenna, New Mexico

Kenna is a small unincorporated community in Roosevelt County, New Mexico, United States. It is located on U.S. Highway 70, 30 mi (48 km) southwest of Portales. The settlement was originally known as Urton, probably named for two brothers who came to the region from the state of Missouri in 1884. A contractor by the name of Kenna camped in Urton during the construction of a roadbed for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. Kenna's camp served as a stopping place for stagecoaches to exchange mail as well as passengers.

In 1899, when the railroad was completed, the name Kenna remained for the camp. Established first as Urton in 1902 by the opening of a post office, the name was changed back to Kenna in 1906.[3] E.D. Kenna, the vice president of the railroad, may have contributed to the final choice of a name.

Kenna was one of the largest cattle shipping points in the state by 1909.[3] At the peak of its development, the town could boast a bank, two hotels, several stores, a post office, as well as several saloons. By 1912, many homesteaders relinquished their claims due to the drought, and Kenna dropped both in size and importance.
