Ultrasound Tech Work Description

Shiloh NJ ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Shiloh NJ hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job functions of a sonogram tech may include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must regularly evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Shiloh NJ ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish. Another option for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that most sonographer colleges do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many colleges set up through Shiloh NJ clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in New Jersey or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Schools

student attending online sonography class in Shiloh NJAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram technician schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Practical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Shiloh NJ outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the balance of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Shiloh home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online colleges are many times less costly than traditional options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But just as with any sonographer school you are considering, check that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal choice for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Shiloh NJ ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Shiloh NJ area. Obviously location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are other things that you should also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Shiloh NJ employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the ultrasound tech colleges you are evaluating have partnerships with Shiloh NJ hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to obtain hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Shiloh medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Shiloh NJ residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  program you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Shiloh NJ area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
