Sonographer Work Description

Belford NJ ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Belford NJ clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily work tasks of an ultrasound technician may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Belford NJ ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that most sonographer colleges do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools organize with Belford NJ clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in New Jersey or whatever state you choose to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in Belford NJAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Belford NJ outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the balance of the classes and training can be attended online in your Belford home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online programs are frequently less costly than on campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be reduced as well. But similarly as with any sonography program you are reviewing, make sure that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the right option for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Belford NJ ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Belford NJ area. Of course location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? Most ultrasound tech colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Belford NJ employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound technician programs you are reviewing have associations with Belford NJ hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to receive hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist students and graduates form professional connections in the Belford health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Belford NJ residence. Those who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Belford NJ area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
