Sonographer Occupation Summary

Bunkerville NV ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Bunkerville NV clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job duties of an ultrasound tech may include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Bunkerville NV ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to complete. Another alternative for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that most sonographer programs do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous schools organize through Bunkerville NV clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Nevada or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Bunkerville NVAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus facility. Practical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Bunkerville NV outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the rest of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Bunkerville home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are many times less expensive than traditional options. Costs for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But similarly as with any sonography college you are considering, confirm that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the right option for you.

What to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Bunkerville NV ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Bunkerville NV area. Of course location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound technician schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Bunkerville NV health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have relationships with Bunkerville NV clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional connections in the Bunkerville healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Nevada healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their Bunkerville NV residence. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  school you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Bunkerville NV area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.

    Bunkerville, Nevada

According to the United States Census Bureau, the census-designated place of Bunkerville (which may not coincide exactly with the town boundaries) has a total area of 43.3 square miles (112.1 km2), of which 42.8 square miles (110.8 km2) is land and 0.50 square miles (1.3 km2), or 1.12%, is water.[3]

Bunkerville was settled in 1877 by Mormon pioneers from Utah. It is named after Edward Bunker, who was already a seasoned pioneer settler before he came to Bunkerville, having pioneered the settlement at Santa Clara, Utah.[4]

Bunker, on his own initiative but with permission from Brigham Young, moved his large polygamous family 25 miles (40 km) southwest to Bunkerville after the settlers in Santa Clara had failed to live the communitarian United Order. The residents of Bunkerville, so named by Brigham Young, established a new communal effort, sharing the work and the fruits of their work, with all land being held in common. The communal experiment ended in 1880.
