Sonogram Tech Work Summary

Gardnerville NV ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Gardnerville NV clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work duties of an ultrasound tech can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Gardnerville NV ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges organize through Gardnerville NV hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Nevada or whatever state you elect to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in Gardnerville NVAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Gardnerville NV outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the rest of the classes and training can be attended online in your Gardnerville home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But similarly as with any sonographer program you are reviewing, confirm that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Gardnerville NV ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Gardnerville NV area. Obviously location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional things that you must also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Gardnerville NV employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the sonogram tech programs you are assessing have partnerships with Gardnerville NV hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to get practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist graduates and students form professional connections in the Gardnerville medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Nevada healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will have to be within driving distance of their Gardnerville NV residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Gardnerville NV area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
