Ultrasound Tech Job Description

Springport MI ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Springport MI hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work tasks of a sonogram tech can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Springport MI ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish. Another option for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that most sonographer programs do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many colleges organize through Springport MI clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Michigan or whichever state you decide to work in.

Online Sonographer Programs

student attending online sonography class in Springport MIAs previously mentioned, almost all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Springport MI outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the balance of the training and classes can be attended online in your Springport home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently more affordable than traditional alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But just as with every sonography school you are reviewing, verify that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal choice for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Springport MI ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Springport MI area. Naturally location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification also. But there are additional things that you should also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you need ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? Most sonogram technician schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Springport MI health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are evaluating have associations with Springport MI clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Springport health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Find out if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Michigan healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they choose will have to be within travelling distance of their Springport MI home. Those who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Springport MI area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
