Ultrasound Technician Occupation Summary

Ubly MI ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Ubly MI clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job functions of a sonogram technician can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Ubly MI ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that almost all sonographer colleges do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous schools organize through Ubly MI clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Michigan or whichever state you decide to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in Ubly MIAs aforementioned, nearly all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus facility. Clinical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Ubly MI outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the balance of the training and classes can be attended online in your Ubly home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times less expensive than on-campus options. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But just as with any sonographer college you are considering, confirm that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Ubly MI ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Ubly MI area. Certainly location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Ubly MI employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the sonogram technician schools you are assessing have relationships with Ubly MI clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Ubly health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Michigan healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Ubly MI residence. Those who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  program you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Ubly MI area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
