Ultrasound Tech Work Description

Saint Johns MI ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Saint Johns MI clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work tasks of a sonogram tech can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Available

Saint Johns MI ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to complete. Another option for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer programs do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many colleges set up through Saint Johns MI hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Michigan or whatever state you decide to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Schools

student attending online sonography class in Saint Johns MIAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off campus facility. Practical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Saint Johns MI outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the remainder of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Saint Johns home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online programs are many times more affordable than traditional alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But similarly as with every sonography school you are looking at, confirm that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Saint Johns MI ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Saint Johns MI area. Of course location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other variables that you must also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? Most sonogram tech colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Saint Johns MI employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram tech programs you are assessing have partnerships with Saint Johns MI clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional connections in the Saint Johns medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Michigan healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they pick will have to be within driving distance of their Saint Johns MI home. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  school you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Saint Johns MI area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
