Ultrasound Tech Occupation Description

Pentwater MI ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Pentwater MI hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work duties of an ultrasound technician can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Available

Pentwater MI ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finish. Another option for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer programs do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges organize through Pentwater MI hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Michigan or whatever state you elect to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Pentwater MIAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Pentwater MI hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the remainder of the classes and training may be attended online in your Pentwater home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently less expensive than on campus options. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be lessened as well. But just as with every sonography college you are reviewing, verify that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal choice for you.

Topics to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Pentwater MI ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Pentwater MI area. Certainly location will be significant if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional variables that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? Most sonogram tech schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Pentwater MI health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the ultrasound technician schools you are reviewing have associations with Pentwater MI hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional connections in the Pentwater medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Michigan healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Pentwater MI home. Students who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  college you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Pentwater MI area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
