Ultrasound Technician Job Description

Jenison MI ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Jenison MI hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work tasks of a sonogram technician may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for further testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Jenison MI ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finish. Another alternative for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges set up with Jenison MI clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Michigan or whatever state you choose to work in.

Online Sonographer Programs

student attending online sonography class in Jenison MIAs aforementioned, virtually all sonogram technician schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Jenison MI hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the balance of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Jenison home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are often more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But similarly as with any sonography school you are considering, verify that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Jenison MI ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Jenison MI area. Obviously location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are other factors that you must also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed review of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Jenison MI health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the ultrasound technician schools you are assessing have relationships with Jenison MI hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to receive practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Jenison healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Michigan healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they pick will have to be within driving distance of their Jenison MI residence. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  college you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Jenison MI area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
