Westminster MA sonographer performing ultrasoundSince you have made a decision to obtain an ultrasound technician degree near Westminster MA, the next step is to start the process of selecting a college. First, you need to find the right program that will furnish the appropriate training to become a qualified professional. And given that some states do mandate that sonographers be either certified or licensed, depending on your residence you may also need to be prepared to pass a licensing or certification exam. So it’s very important that you investigate each program so that you can evaluate and compare your options. But just where does one start? Many potential students will start by looking for colleges that are within commuting distance of their residences and then by comparing tuition. Of course cost and location must be considered when arriving at a decision, but there are additional critical factors also. For example, if the ultrasound technician schools have earned accreditation or if they provide internships. These and other qualifications will be addressed more in detail later in this post. Sonographer Job Summary

Westminster MA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Westminster MA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job duties of an ultrasound technician may involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Available

Westminster MA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finish. Another option for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous schools sponsor with Westminster MA clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Massachusetts or whichever state you decide to work in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Classes

student attending online sonography class in Westminster MAAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off campus facility. Clinical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Westminster MA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Westminster home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently less costly than on campus alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be lessened as well. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech program you are looking at, verify that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Westminster MA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Westminster MA area. Certainly location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Westminster MA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the ultrasound technician colleges you are assessing have associations with Westminster MA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to get practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Westminster health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Massachusetts healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they pick will need to be within commuting distance of their Westminster MA home. Those who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Westminster MA area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
