Sonogram Tech Occupation Description

North Pembroke MA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in North Pembroke MA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job duties of a sonogram technician may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

North Pembroke MA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that most sonographer schools do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges set up with North Pembroke MA clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Massachusetts or whatever state you decide to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in North Pembroke MAAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an authorized off campus facility. Practical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local North Pembroke MA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the remainder of the classes and training can be accessed online in your North Pembroke home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently less expensive than traditional options. Costs for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But just as with every sonographer school you are considering, make sure that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask North Pembroke MA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the North Pembroke MA area. Obviously location will be important if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification also. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you need ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram tech schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of North Pembroke MA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound technician programs you are reviewing have partnerships with North Pembroke MA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional relationships in the North Pembroke healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Massachusetts healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they choose will have to be within travelling distance of their North Pembroke MA home. Those who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  college you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the North Pembroke MA area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
