Sonogram Tech Work Summary

Marshfield MA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Marshfield MA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work duties of a sonogram technician can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for further testing

Sonographers must regularly evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Marshfield MA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that most sonographer colleges do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many schools sponsor with Marshfield MA clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Massachusetts or whatever state you elect to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Marshfield MAAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an approved off campus facility. Practical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Marshfield MA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Marshfield home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are often less expensive than traditional alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be decreased as well. But similarly as with any sonography program you are looking at, check that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Marshfield MA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Marshfield MA area. Obviously location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Marshfield MA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have relationships with Marshfield MA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Marshfield health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Massachusetts healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they pick will need to be within driving distance of their Marshfield MA home. Students who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  school you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Marshfield MA area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.

The South River divides a peninsula from the rest of the town, where Rexhame village and the Humarock and Fourth Cliff neighborhoods of the town of Scituate lie. The Scituate neighborhoods can be reached by land by two bridges, by boat, or by foot along Rexhame Beach. The Rexhame-Humarock peninsula is a barrier beach with an 84-foot-high (26 m) moraine, one of only two barrier beach moraines on the east coast of the United States.
