Sonographer Work Description

Marshfield Hills MA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Marshfield Hills MA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work tasks of an ultrasound tech can include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for further testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

An Associate Degree will usually involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many colleges set up through Marshfield Hills MA hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Massachusetts or whichever state you choose to work in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Classes

student attending online sonography class in Marshfield Hills MAAs aforementioned, almost all ultrasound technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Marshfield Hills MA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the rest of the classes and training can be attended online in your Marshfield Hills home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online colleges are often less expensive than traditional options. Costs for commuting and study materials can be decreased as well. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech program you are looking at, make sure that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the right option for you.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Marshfield Hills MA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the ultrasound tech colleges you are reviewing have relationships with Marshfield Hills MA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Massachusetts healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will need to be within driving distance of their Marshfield Hills MA home. Students who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  program you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Marshfield Hills MA area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
