Sonographer Occupation Summary

Lerose KY ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Lerose KY hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work functions of an ultrasound tech can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

Lerose KY ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many schools set up through Lerose KY hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Kentucky or whichever state you elect to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Schools

student attending online sonography class in Lerose KYAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Practical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Lerose KY hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the balance of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Lerose home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times less costly than on campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting can be lessened as well. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech college you are considering, check that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Lerose KY ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Lerose KY area. Clearly location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional things that you should also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed review of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Lerose KY employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the ultrasound tech colleges you are interested in have partnerships with Lerose KY hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Lerose health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Kentucky healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they pick will have to be within commuting distance of their Lerose KY home. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  program you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Lerose KY area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
