Sonographer Work Description

Hodgenville KY ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Hodgenville KY hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work tasks of a sonogram tech may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Hodgenville KY ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many colleges set up through Hodgenville KY hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Kentucky or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Hodgenville KYAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Hodgenville KY outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the remainder of the classes and training may be attended online in your Hodgenville home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online schools are many times less expensive than traditional alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But similarly as with any sonographer school you are considering, verify that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Hodgenville KY ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Hodgenville KY area. Of course location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are additional factors that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous examination of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Hodgenville KY employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram tech programs you are interested in have partnerships with Hodgenville KY hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may assist students and graduates form professional connections in the Hodgenville healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Kentucky healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they pick will have to be within travelling distance of their Hodgenville KY residence. Students who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Hodgenville KY area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.

    Hodgenville, Kentucky

Hodgenville is a home rule-class city[2] in LaRue County, Kentucky, United States. It is the seat of its county.[3] Hodgenville sits along the North Fork of the Nolin River. The population was 3,206 at the 2010 census. It is included in the Elizabethtown metropolitan area.

Robert Hodgen, a Pennsylvania native who moved to Virginia, purchased 10,000 acres of land in the vicinity. In 1789, after the American Revolutionary War, when settlers started moving west into Kentucky, he built a mill at the site. After his death, the community that developed around it was called Hodgenville upon the petition of his widow and children. The United States post office at the site, however, was known as Hodgensville from 1826 to 1904.[4]

Abraham Lincoln was born in a small cabin on Sinking Spring Farm near Hodgenville on February 12, 1809.[6] About two years later, the family moved to another farm in the Hodgenville area.[7] Despite claims made later, the cabin Lincoln was born in was likely destroyed by the time of his assassination.
