Burlington KY sonographer performing ultrasoundNow that you have made a decision to obtain an ultrasound technician degree near Burlington KY, the next step is to begin the procedure of choosing a school. To begin with, you need to find the right program that will provide the proper instruction to become a skilled professional. And because some states do require that sonographers be either licensed or certified, depending on where you will practice you may also need to be prepared to pass a licensing or certification exam. So it’s very important that you investigate each school in order to evaluate and compare your options. But just where does one begin? Most individuals will start by searching for schools that are within commuting distance of their homes and then by comparing tuition. Certainly location and cost should be taken into account when arriving at a decision, but there are other significant factors also. For instance, if the ultrasound technician schools have earned accreditation or if they offer internship programs. These and additional qualifiers will be covered more in detail later in this post. But first, let’s review what a sonogram tech does and the degrees and online education options that are offered.

Ultrasound Tech Job Description

Burlington KY ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Burlington KY hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job functions of an ultrasound technician may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Burlington KY ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many colleges sponsor through Burlington KY hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Kentucky or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Burlington KYAs aforementioned, nearly all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off campus facility. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Burlington KY hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the balance of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Burlington home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are often more affordable than on campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be decreased as well. But just as with any sonographer college you are looking at, check that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Burlington KY ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Burlington KY area. Obviously location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are additional things that you should also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Burlington KY health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the ultrasound technician programs you are evaluating have partnerships with Burlington KY clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Burlington health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Kentucky healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they select will have to be within driving distance of their Burlington KY home. Students who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Burlington KY area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
