Ultrasound Tech Work Description

Hestand KY ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Hestand KY clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work duties of a sonogram tech can involve:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Hestand KY ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools organize through Hestand KY clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Kentucky or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Sonographer Schools

student attending online sonography class in Hestand KYAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus facility. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Hestand KY hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the rest of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Hestand home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are many times more affordable than traditional options. Costs for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But just as with any ultrasound tech program you are considering, confirm that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal choice for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

Questions to ask Hestand KY ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Hestand KY area. Naturally location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive examination of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Hestand KY employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are evaluating have relationships with Hestand KY hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Hestand health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Kentucky healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Hestand KY residence. Those who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Hestand KY area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
