Ultrasound Technician Job Description

Fisherville KY ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Fisherville KY hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work tasks of a sonogram tech can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Fisherville KY ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to complete. Another option for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many schools set up with Fisherville KY clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Kentucky or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Classes

student attending online sonography class in Fisherville KYAs previously mentioned, almost all sonogram tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Fisherville KY hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the balance of the classes and training can be attended online in your Fisherville home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently less costly than on-campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But just as with any sonographer school you are reviewing, make sure that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Fisherville KY ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Fisherville KY area. Obviously location will be important if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other variables that you should also take into consideration, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Fisherville KY health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the sonogram tech schools you are reviewing have partnerships with Fisherville KY clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to get practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Fisherville health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Kentucky healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their Fisherville KY home. Those who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  school you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Fisherville KY area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.

    Fisherville, Louisville

Fisherville is a neighborhood of Louisville, Kentucky, United States, which is centered along Taylorsville Road and Finchville Road.[1] It was originally named Curreys after Edward Currey, who opened a post office in 1833.[2] In 1847, it was renamed after Robert Fisher who had died two years earlier and operated a mill on Floyds Fork with his father, John. The area became more commercial in the late 19th and early 20th centuries due to the opening of railroad tracks and the discovery of a mineral water well. Visitors came for the therapeutic value of the mineral water, but when the well went dry in 1914 the area began its reversion to being a primarily residential area. Fisherville is also home of one of Louisville's great Basketball coaches, Denny Crum, who coached for the University of Louisville for 30 years attaining 2 Men's Basketball Championships.
