Drakesboro KY ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to complete. Another alternative for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many colleges organize through Drakesboro KY hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Kentucky or whichever state you choose to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in Drakesboro KYAs aforementioned, virtually all sonogram tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Drakesboro KY hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the balance of the training and classes may be attended online in your Drakesboro home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online schools are often less costly than on campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be lessened also. But just as with any sonography program you are looking at, confirm that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the right option for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Drakesboro KY ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Drakesboro KY area. Certainly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are other variables that you must also take into consideration, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you need ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Drakesboro KY health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have relationships with Drakesboro KY clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Drakesboro medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Kentucky healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Drakesboro KY residence. Those who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Drakesboro KY area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
