Ultrasound Technician Occupation Summary

Nortonville KS ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Nortonville KS hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job duties of an ultrasound technician can consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for further testing

Sonographers must regularly evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Nortonville KS ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish. Another alternative for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many colleges set up through Nortonville KS clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Kansas or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Nortonville KSAs aforementioned, virtually all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Nortonville KS hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the balance of the training and classes may be attended online in your Nortonville home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online schools are often less costly than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But similarly as with any sonography program you are looking at, verify that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Nortonville KS ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Nortonville KS area. Of course location will be significant if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are other variables that you must also take into account, such as if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram technician schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Nortonville KS employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have associations with Nortonville KS clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional connections in the Nortonville medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Kansas healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their Nortonville KS residence. Students who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  college you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Nortonville KS area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
