Sonographer Work Description

Minneola KS ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Minneola KS clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job duties of an ultrasound tech can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Minneola KS ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take about 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete. Another alternative for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer programs do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Minneola KS clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Kansas or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Minneola KSAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Minneola KS outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the remainder of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Minneola home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online programs are frequently less costly than on campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But just as with any ultrasound tech program you are looking at, verify that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Minneola KS ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Minneola KS area. Certainly location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other variables that you must also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Minneola KS health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the sonogram technician programs you are reviewing have partnerships with Minneola KS clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Minneola healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Kansas healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they choose will need to be within driving distance of their Minneola KS residence. Students who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  college you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Minneola KS area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
