Ultrasound Technician Occupation Summary

Glasco KS ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Glasco KS hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work tasks of a sonogram tech may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must regularly evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Glasco KS ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to complete. Another alternative for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that almost all sonographer schools do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many schools organize with Glasco KS clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Kansas or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Glasco KSAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Practical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Glasco KS hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the rest of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Glasco home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently less costly than on-campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But similarly as with every sonography college you are considering, check that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the right option for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Glasco KS ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Glasco KS area. Naturally location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other factors that you should also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram technician schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Glasco KS employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are evaluating have partnerships with Glasco KS hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to receive practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Glasco medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Kansas healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they pick will need to be within driving distance of their Glasco KS home. Those who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  school you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Glasco KS area, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
