Sonographer Work Summary

Claflin KS ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Claflin KS hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work duties of an ultrasound technician can involve:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Claflin KS ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many schools organize with Claflin KS hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Kansas or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonographer Programs

student attending online sonography class in Claflin KSAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound technician colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus facility. Clinical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Claflin KS outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the balance of the classes and training may be attended online in your Claflin home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are many times less expensive than traditional options. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech school you are considering, check that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Claflin KS ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Claflin KS area. Naturally location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional variables that you should also take into consideration, such as if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive examination of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Claflin KS employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the sonogram tech colleges you are interested in have associations with Claflin KS clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Claflin healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Kansas healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they select will need to be within driving distance of their Claflin KS home. Those who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Claflin KS area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
