Sonographer Work Summary

Kechi KS ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Kechi KS hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work functions of a sonogram technician may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Kechi KS ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer colleges do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous schools set up with Kechi KS clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Kansas or whichever state you decide to work in.

Online Sonographer Programs

student attending online sonography class in Kechi KSAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at an approved off campus facility. Practical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Kechi KS outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the rest of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Kechi home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online schools are often less expensive than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But similarly as with every sonographer school you are considering, check that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Kechi KS ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Kechi KS area. Certainly location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional variables that you must also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you need ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed review of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Kechi KS health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound technician programs you are reviewing have partnerships with Kechi KS clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Kechi medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Kansas healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their Kechi KS residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Kechi KS area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
