Ultrasound Tech Occupation Summary

Letts IA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Letts IA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work functions of an ultrasound tech can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Letts IA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Letts IA hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Iowa or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Online Sonographer Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Letts IAAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an approved off-campus facility. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Letts IA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the rest of the classes and training can be attended online in your Letts home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently more affordable than on-campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be reduced as well. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech school you are reviewing, make sure that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Letts IA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Letts IA area. Obviously location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into consideration, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous examination of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Letts IA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram tech colleges you are evaluating have relationships with Letts IA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Letts health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Iowa healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Letts IA home. Students who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  program you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Letts IA area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
