No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Urbandale IA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work tasks of a sonogram technician can include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Urbandale IA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor with Urbandale IA clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Iowa or whichever state you elect to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Urbandale IAAs aforementioned, nearly all sonogram tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Urbandale IA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the rest of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Urbandale home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are often less costly than traditional alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But just as with any sonography school you are looking at, verify that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the right option for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Urbandale IA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Urbandale IA area. Clearly location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other variables that you must also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are a few questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Urbandale IA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the sonogram technician colleges you are interested in have relationships with Urbandale IA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to get practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Urbandale medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Iowa healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they select will have to be within driving distance of their Urbandale IA home. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Urbandale IA area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.

    Urbandale, Iowa

Urbandale is a city in Polk County and Dallas County, Iowa, United States. As of the 2010 U.S. Census, the city population was 39,463. It is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Urbandale was incorporated as a city on April 16, 1917. In its early days, Urbandale served as a streetcar suburb of Des Moines with four coal mines. Urbandale served as the end of the "Urbandale Line" after plans to build a railroad from Des Moines to Woodward were abandoned because of right-of-way issues. The coal mines had closed by the end of the 1940s while streetcar service ended in 1951.

In 1920, shortly after the city incorporated, Urbandale had 298 people. Its population in 1950 was 1,777, but the city grew rapidly after that along with the rest of Des Moines' suburbs. By 1970 Urbandale had 14,434 people, and in 2000 it had 29,072.[4] Although most of the city's developed area is in Polk County, Urbandale has expanded westward into Dallas County in recent years.
