Woodridge IL ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Woodridge IL clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work tasks of a sonogram technician may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable

Another alternative for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of sonographer programs do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many colleges set up through Woodridge IL clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Illinois or whatever state you decide to work in.

student attending online sonography class in Woodridge ILAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off-campus facility. Practical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Woodridge IL outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the remainder of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Woodridge home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are many times more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But just as with any sonographer program you are considering, make sure that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

Questions to ask Woodridge IL ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Woodridge IL area. Of course location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech schools have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed review of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Woodridge IL employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram technician programs you are interested in have associations with Woodridge IL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may assist students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Woodridge healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Illinois healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their Woodridge IL home. Those who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  college you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Woodridge IL area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
