Ultrasound Tech Work Description

South Roxana IL ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in South Roxana IL clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work tasks of an ultrasound technician may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for further testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

South Roxana IL ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete. Another option for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that almost all ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many schools organize with South Roxana IL hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Illinois or whichever state you decide to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in South Roxana ILAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an approved off-campus facility. Clinical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local South Roxana IL outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the remainder of the classes and training may be accessed online in your South Roxana home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are often more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be decreased also. But just as with any sonographer school you are considering, make sure that the online program you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask South Roxana IL ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the South Roxana IL area. Naturally location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional variables that you should also take into consideration, such as if the schools are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? Most ultrasound technician colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous South Roxana IL employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the sonogram tech schools you are assessing have partnerships with South Roxana IL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional connections in the South Roxana health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Illinois healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their South Roxana IL residence. Students who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  school you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the South Roxana IL area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
