Sonographer Work Summary

Beaver AK ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Beaver AK hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job tasks of a sonogram technician can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Beaver AK ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of sonographer colleges do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many colleges organize with Beaver AK clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Alaska or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Classes

student attending online sonography class in Beaver AKAs previously mentioned, nearly all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Beaver AK outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the remainder of the classes and training can be attended online in your Beaver home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are often less costly than on-campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But just as with any sonography college you are reviewing, make sure that the online program you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Beaver AK ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Beaver AK area. Of course location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are other factors that you should also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are several questions that you need ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Beaver AK employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have relationships with Beaver AK clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Beaver medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Alaska healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they select will need to be within driving distance of their Beaver AK home. Those who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Beaver AK area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
