Ultrasound Technician Work Description

Shaktoolik AK ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Shaktoolik AK clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job functions of a sonogram tech may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Shaktoolik AK ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer schools do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many colleges sponsor through Shaktoolik AK hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Alaska or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Sonographer Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Shaktoolik AKAs aforementioned, virtually all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Shaktoolik AK outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the rest of the classes and training can be attended online in your Shaktoolik home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are frequently less expensive than on campus options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But just as with every sonographer program you are reviewing, make sure that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Shaktoolik AK ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Shaktoolik AK area. Obviously location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional variables that you must also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Shaktoolik AK employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound tech colleges you are interested in have associations with Shaktoolik AK hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Shaktoolik healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Alaska healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they pick will need to be within commuting distance of their Shaktoolik AK home. Those who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Shaktoolik AK area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.

    Shaktoolik, Alaska

Shaktoolik (Inupiaq: Saqtuliq, IPA: [sɑqtuleq]) is a city in Nome Census Area, Alaska, United States. At the 2010 census the population was 251, up from 230 in 2000. Shaktoolik is one of a number of Alaskan communities threatened by erosion and related global warming effects.[5] The community has been relocated twice.

According to the Alaska Dept. of Community and Economic Development, Shaktoolik was the first and southernmost Malemiut settlement on Norton Sound, occupied as early as 1839. Twelve miles northwest, on Cape Denbigh, is "Iyatayet", a site that is 6,000 to 8,000 years old, and listed on the national register of historic places. Shaktoolik was first mapped in 1842-44 by Lt. Lavrenty Zagoskin, Imperial Russian Navy, who called it "Tshaktogmyut." "Shaktoolik" is derived from an Unaliq word, "suktuliq", meaning "scattered things".

Reindeer herds were managed in the Shaktoolik area around 1905. The village was originally located six miles up the Shaktoolik River, and moved to the mouth of the River in 1933. This site was prone to severe storms and winds, however, and the village relocated to its present, more sheltered location in 1967. There are presently only two occupied dwellings at the old townsite. The City was incorporated in 1969.
