Ultrasound Tech Job Summary

Saratoga WY ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Saratoga WY clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job duties of a sonogram technician may involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for additional testing

Sonographers must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Saratoga WY ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finish. Another alternative for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that almost all ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many colleges set up with Saratoga WY hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Wyoming or whatever state you elect to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Saratoga WYAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus facility. Clinical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Saratoga WY outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the rest of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Saratoga home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online programs are many times more affordable than on campus alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But just as with every sonographer program you are looking at, confirm that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Saratoga WY ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Saratoga WY area. Clearly location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Saratoga WY employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the ultrasound technician schools you are assessing have associations with Saratoga WY clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Saratoga medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Wyoming healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their Saratoga WY residence. Students who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Saratoga WY area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
