Sonogram Tech Job Summary

Waterford WI ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Waterford WI hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job duties of an ultrasound technician may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for further testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Waterford WI ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer programs do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many schools set up with Waterford WI clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Wisconsin or whatever state you decide to work in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Schools

student attending online sonography class in Waterford WIAs aforementioned, nearly all ultrasound technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off campus facility. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Waterford WI outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the remainder of the training and classes may be attended online in your Waterford home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are many times less expensive than on campus options. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be lessened as well. But similarly as with any sonographer college you are considering, make sure that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Waterford WI ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Waterford WI area. Certainly location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are other things that you must also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Waterford WI health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the ultrasound technician colleges you are reviewing have associations with Waterford WI clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Waterford health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Wisconsin healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Waterford WI home. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  college you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Waterford WI area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
