Sun Prairie WI sonographer performing ultrasoundOnce you have made a decision to obtain an ultrasound technician degree near Sun Prairie WI, it’s time to begin the process of picking a college. First, you must find the right program that will provide the necessary education to become a skilled professional. And since a number of states do require that sonographers be either certified or licensed, depending on your residence you may also need preparation to pass a certification or licensing exam. So it’s extremely important that you investigate each college so that you can assess and compare your choices. But just where does one begin? A number of students will begin by looking for colleges that are within driving distance of their residences and then by comparing tuition. Certainly location and cost should be taken into account when arriving at a decision, but there are other significant factors also. For example, if the ultrasound technician schools have earned accreditation or if they offer internship programs. These and additional qualifications will be discussed more in detail later in this post. But to start with, let’s go over what a sonogram tech does and the degrees and online education programs that are offered.

Ultrasound Tech Job Description

Sun Prairie WI ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Sun Prairie WI clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work functions of a sonogram technician can consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Sun Prairie WI ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another option for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer schools do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor with Sun Prairie WI hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Wisconsin or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Sun Prairie WIAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Sun Prairie WI outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the remainder of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Sun Prairie home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are many times less expensive than on campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting can be lessened as well. But just as with every ultrasound tech school you are reviewing, check that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Sun Prairie WI ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Sun Prairie WI area. Naturally location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other things that you should also take into account, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed review of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Sun Prairie WI health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the sonogram technician schools you are assessing have partnerships with Sun Prairie WI hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Sun Prairie healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Wisconsin healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their Sun Prairie WI home. Those who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  school you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Sun Prairie WI area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.

    Sun Prairie, Wisconsin

Sun Prairie is a city in Dane County in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. A suburb of Madison, it is part of the Madison Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city's population was 29,441 at the 2010 U.S. Census. It is the second-most populous city in Dane County after Madison.[9]

President Martin Van Buren commissioned a party of 45 men, including Augustus A. Bird, to build a capitol for the Territory of Wisconsin in Madison. The group left Milwaukee on May 26, 1837, and traveled for days in the rain. On June 9, the group emerged at the edge of the prairie and with the sun shining for the first time in days, carved the words "Sun Prairie" into a tree. Charles Bird returned to the area two years later and became the first settler.[10][11]

The Town of Sun Prairie was created on February 2, 1846.[12] The village of Sun Prairie, which grew from that town, was incorporated in an act of the Wisconsin legislature on March 6, 1868.[13] Sun Prairie was incorporated as a city in 1958.[14]
