Sonographer Job Summary

Minong WI ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Minong WI hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job functions of a sonogram technician can include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for further testing

Sonographers must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Minong WI ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that the majority of sonographer programs do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor with Minong WI clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Wisconsin or whatever state you decide to work in.

Sonographer Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Minong WIAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off-campus facility. Practical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Minong WI hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the rest of the classes and training may be attended online in your Minong home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online programs are many times more affordable than on campus options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be lessened also. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech school you are reviewing, verify that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Minong WI ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Minong WI area. Of course location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are other things that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Minong WI employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the sonogram tech schools you are interested in have relationships with Minong WI hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to receive practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Minong medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Wisconsin healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they pick will need to be within travelling distance of their Minong WI home. Students who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  college you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Minong WI area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
