Ultrasound Tech Work Summary

Little Suamico WI ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Little Suamico WI hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job functions of a sonogram tech may include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Little Suamico WI ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools set up with Little Suamico WI hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Wisconsin or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Little Suamico WIAs aforementioned, nearly all sonogram tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus facility. Practical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Little Suamico WI hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the rest of the classes and training may be attended online in your Little Suamico home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are many times less expensive than traditional options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But similarly as with every sonographer college you are looking at, confirm that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the right option for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Little Suamico WI ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Little Suamico WI area. Obviously location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other variables that you must also take into account, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech schools have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Little Suamico WI health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the sonogram tech schools you are interested in have relationships with Little Suamico WI clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to receive hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Little Suamico medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Wisconsin healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they select will have to be within driving distance of their Little Suamico WI home. Those who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  school you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Little Suamico WI area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
