Ultrasound Tech Occupation Summary

Hannibal WI ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Hannibal WI clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily work duties of a sonogram tech may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

Hannibal WI ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous schools sponsor through Hannibal WI clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Wisconsin or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonographer Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Hannibal WIAs aforementioned, almost all ultrasound technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus facility. Clinical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Hannibal WI outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the remainder of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Hannibal home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are often less costly than on campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting can be reduced as well. But similarly as with any sonographer program you are looking at, verify that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Hannibal WI ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Hannibal WI area. Of course location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Hannibal WI employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the ultrasound tech colleges you are reviewing have relationships with Hannibal WI hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Hannibal healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Find out if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Wisconsin healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they choose will have to be within driving distance of their Hannibal WI residence. Students who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Hannibal WI area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.

    Hannibal and Scipio

Hannibal and Scipio is a Caroline era stage play, a classical tragedy written by Thomas Nabbes. The play was first performed in 1635 by Queen Henrietta's Men, and was first published in 1637. The first edition of the play contained a cast list of the original production, making the 1637 quarto an important information source on English Renaissance theatre.

As its title indicates, the play relates the historical rivalry between Hannibal and Scipio Africanus. Out of the vast array of historical source material on the subject, Nabbes relied primarily upon the account of the Second Punic War given by Livy in his history of Rome, Ab Urbe condita, and upon Plutarch's Lives of Hannibal and Scipio.[1]

Earlier English plays on the subject had been written and acted. A Scipio Africanus, author unknown, was staged at the English Court on 3 January 1580;[2] a Hannibal and Hermes by Thomas Dekker, Michael Drayton, and Robert Wilson dated from 1598; it was followed by a Hannibal and Scipio by Richard Hathwaye and William Rankins in 1601.[3] (None of these works is extant.) John Marston's The Wonder of Women (1606) deals with the related figure of Sophonisba.[4]
