Ultrasound Tech Work Description

Hales Corners WI ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Hales Corners WI hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work tasks of an ultrasound tech can include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for additional testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Hales Corners WI ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete. Another option for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that almost all sonographer schools do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor through Hales Corners WI hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Wisconsin or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Classes

student attending online sonography class in Hales Corners WIAs previously mentioned, virtually all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an approved off campus facility. Clinical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Hales Corners WI hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the remainder of the classes and training may be attended online in your Hales Corners home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online programs are many times less costly than on-campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting may be lessened also. But just as with any ultrasound tech college you are reviewing, confirm that the online program you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Hales Corners WI ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Hales Corners WI area. Certainly location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech schools have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Hales Corners WI employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the sonogram technician programs you are evaluating have partnerships with Hales Corners WI clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to get practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Hales Corners health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Find out if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Wisconsin healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Hales Corners WI residence. Students who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Hales Corners WI area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
