Ultrasound Tech Work Summary

Sistersville WV ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Sistersville WV clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work tasks of a sonogram technician may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Sistersville WV ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many colleges organize through Sistersville WV clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in West Virginia or whatever state you choose to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Sistersville WVAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off campus facility. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Sistersville WV outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the balance of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Sistersville home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are often less expensive than traditional options. Costs for study materials and commuting can be lessened as well. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech program you are considering, check that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Sistersville WV ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Sistersville WV area. Certainly location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other variables that you should also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound tech schools have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Sistersville WV employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the sonogram technician schools you are interested in have associations with Sistersville WV clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional connections in the Sistersville healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with West Virginia healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they choose will need to be within driving distance of their Sistersville WV residence. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Sistersville WV area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
