Sonographer Work Description

Oak Hill WV ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Oak Hill WV hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job tasks of a sonogram tech can involve:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Oak Hill WV ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that the majority of sonographer colleges do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges organize through Oak Hill WV hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in West Virginia or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Oak Hill WVAs previously mentioned, virtually all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus facility. Practical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Oak Hill WV hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the remainder of the classes and training may be attended online in your Oak Hill home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are often less expensive than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But similarly as with any sonographer college you are looking at, check that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Oak Hill WV ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Oak Hill WV area. Of course location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are other things that you must also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous examination of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Oak Hill WV health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the sonogram tech programs you are interested in have partnerships with Oak Hill WV clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Oak Hill medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with West Virginia healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their Oak Hill WV residence. Students who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  school you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Oak Hill WV area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
